Amarnath Yatra Starts Amidst Tension In Kashmir

The Amarnath Yatra which is the annual pilgrimage to a Himalayan cave shrine started on Thursday amidst the tension in Kashmir.

However it is reported that the street protests have been less, if compared to the previous few days during which, the authorities had to impose curfew in parts of the valley.

A police officer reported that 16,000 pilgrims started the journey of climbing to the south Kashmir shrine for worshipping the Hindu God Shiva. He said, "All the pilgrims are safe. Adequate arrangements of security have been made along the yatra route."

Security has been beefed up in that area due to the tensions in Kashmir because of violent protests triggered by the death of eight youth, mostly teenagers, in security forces firing in the last five days. About 3,000 Border Security Force (BSF) troopers have been deployed in the Kashmir Anantnag district on Wednesday.

N.N. Vohra, Jammu and Kashmir Governor also prayed at the cave on the first day of the two-month-long annual Amarnath pilgrimage that ends Aug 25.
